How do we transform our world?

The SDGs describe what a sustainable future could look like. But how do we get there? SDSN proposes six areas of transformations to make the pathways forward easier to understand.

SDSN proposes six areas of transformation

The SDGs and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change set out big plans for countries worldwide. These plans need the support of governments, communities, scientists, and businesses. But sometimes, it's hard to figure out how to make these goals a reality. That's why SDSN recommends six SDG Transformations.

Shaping a sustainable future in the Nordics

Sustainability isn’t just an idea — it’s a way of life. Imagine a Nordic society where people, the environment, and prosperity are all in perfect balance. Envisioning what a sustainable society could look like helps us understand the kind of solutions we need to develop and share globally. This forward-thinking approach does more than prepare us for change, it inspires hope and provides a tangible goal to strive for.

Here’s an imaginary glimpse of what a sustainable Nordic society could look like, ensuring that everyone’s needs are met today, while safeguarding the future for generations to come.

Clean and green cities

Nordic cities are characterised by their lush green spaces, including parks, forests, and waterfronts, which integrate nature into urban life. Rooftop gardens, urban farms, and community gardens support local agriculture and biodiversity. Buildings utilise renewable materials like bamboo and mycelium, with energy-efficient designs and rainwater systems. Public transportation, including biomass and geothermal-powered buses and trams, and smart, autonomous vehicles, operates on local, renewable energy. Cycling and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure promotes human-powered transport.

Responsible resource use

Recycling and composting are routine, with a focus on minimalism and quality. Homes are durable and repairable, and the region leads in renewable energy with wind, hydro, and geothermal power. Regenerative farming enhances rural landscapes, boosting soil fertility and supporting wildlife.

Social equity and inclusion

High-quality education, healthcare, and social services are accessible to all, ensuring inclusivity and reducing inequality. Fairness is embedded in societal policies and practices.

Protecting our natural beauty

In the Nordic landscapes there are dense forests that stretch unbroken sheltering vibrant wildlife. The air is crisp and the soil is rich, free from pollutants. Pristine fjords and clear lakes are alive. We’ve created a Nordic region where our forests, rivers, and seas thrive. The Nordic wilderness, once at risk, is now a living testament to the power of restoration, with natural beauty preserved and biodiversity flourishing under careful stewardship.

Innovative economy

The economy thrives on sustainability, with green jobs in renewable energy and circular economy practices. Products are designed for durability, reuse, and recycling, supporting a circular economy where waste becomes a resource.

Education and culture

Sustainability is a core focus in education from an early age, establishing a culture of informed, responsible living. Minimalism and durability are valued, with community workshops teaching repair and repurposing skills.

Global responsibility

The Nordic region leads in global cooperation to tackle climate change, poverty, and inequality, supporting sustainable development initiatives and promoting fair resource management worldwide.
